If you are a smoker you are probably aware of the fact that there are many harmful smoking effects and dangers involved with smoking. Some are cosmetic, some are financial, but the most dangerous effects are the ones that will ruin your health and shorten your life.

For a smoker, education is the most powerful tool to learn exactly how smoking is destroying their bodies. Once you know the harmful effects smoking has on you the decision to quit becomes an easy one. After that it is a question of how, not when, you are going to quit smoking.

With that being said let’s take a closer look at the most harmful effects of smoking. There are many but we will look at the ones that are the two most dangerous to your health.

Smoking and Lung Disease

Smoking is harmful to just about every major system of the body but it is particularly devastating to the respiratory system. As smoke is inhaled through the respiratory system it’s poisonous toxins do their work on the lungs causing a number of different respiratory diseases. Some of these diseases include emphysema, bronchitis, and the most deadly respiratory disease; Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease or COPD.

COPD basically makes it very difficult to breath and as the condition worsens it becomes fatal. There is no cure for COPD and the longer one smokes the greater the chance of developing COPD.

Smoking and Cancer

Smoking increases the risk of getting just about any form of cancer but it is most responsible for lung cancer. Smoking is responsible for 87 percent of lung cancer deaths. Tobacco smoke contains thousands of harmful chemical agents and continued exposure to these chemical agents eventually can lead to lung cancer.

The more one smokes the greater the chance of developing lung cancer. If you are a heavy smoker (a pack a day or more) your chances are even greater. However the sooner a smoker quits, their risk of developing cancer lessens. Research has shown that smokers who break the habit before the age of 50 reduce their risk of dying in the next 15 years by half as compared to people who continued to smoke.

Make no mistake there are numerous harmful smoking effects and tobacco smoking can be fatal. Smoking is the single most preventable cause of death in the United States. Do not become one of the statistics of smoking.
