Worcester: Facts and Tips About Tile and Grout Cleaning

Cleaning tiles is pretty much easier as compared to cleaning grout because of its location and porous nature make it challenging to maintain. Through proper cleaning of your grout, you can definitely extend the life of your grout for many years, making it look good and really clean! Maintaining a clean grout does not only benefit your bathroom and kitchen tiles but also your counters and walls. While it is true that tiles are easier to maintain and clean, grout absorbs spills and dirt easily due to its porous nature, that’s why it gets stains easily. In your kitchen, a dirty grout is basically caused by spills because upon their entry, grime and dirt stains the grout. In your bathroom, soap, mildew, and mold make your grout dirty.

First, to remove the dirt and grime from the grout surface, you can wipe it down with a hot water. Next, you can spray a cleaning agent on the grout or you can make a mixture of your own by combining water and vinegar into a spray bottle (50-50). Spray it on the grout and let it sit for five to ten minutes, and later scrub it with a soft brush. It is fine to use an old toothbrush or any small scrub to scrub the grout, or you can also use an electric toothbrush for extra scrubbing power. Avoid using a metal brush because it will scratch your tile and knock out pieces of the grout. Be sure to read the manufacturer’s instructions if you are using a commercially prepared grout cleaner or diluted bleach on how to apply it and clean the floor grout. Be sure to use them sparingly though because it can erode the grout with frequent use. If you are dealing with stubborn stains, you can mix a paste of baking soda in two parts and one part water. Just apply it on the grout stain, let it stand overnight, and scrub using a nylon brush. If your tiles are coarse or porous such as marble, better use a less acidic solution because vinegar can definitely stain these type of tiles. You can mix two-parts of baking soda to one-part of peroxide, and scrub it onto the grout using a soft brush. You can also remove stubborn stains by using a sandpaper by folding it and working on the creased edge back and forth along the grout line.

Among all of the cleaning agents available sold in the market today, mild soap and warm water are your best buddies when it comes to effective and gentle cleaning of your grout and tiles. As much as possible, avoid using products that add shine to your tiles because wax can build over time causing a dingy and dark appearance. For routine care for your tiles and grout, always use doormats outside your entrance, wipe down countertops using mild soap and water, sweep your floors in order to loosen dirt, at least once a week, wipe up any spills immediately, and mop floors using a neutral cleaner.
